Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes Guide
A Place of Peace and Prayer: The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes at Notre Dame Guide
Nestled on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is a serene and spiritual replica of the original grotto in Lourdes, France. This sacred space offers a tranquil escape for visitors of all faiths, providing a place for reflection, prayer, and quiet contemplation. Whether you're a devout Catholic, a spiritual seeker, or simply someone looking for a moment of peace, the Grotto is a must-see destination in South Bend. Inspired by the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France, the Notre Dame Grotto was built in 1896 by Father Thomas Carroll, CSC. He envisioned a place where students and visitors could find solace and connect with their faith. The Grotto is constructed from stones gathered from around the Notre Dame campus and features a statue of the Virgin Mary in a niche above a small altar. Thousands of candles burn continuously, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Visitors to the Grotto can participate in a variety of activities. Light a candle and offer a prayer. Walk the path around the Grotto, taking in the peaceful surroundings. Attend a Mass or prayer service held at the Grotto. Simply sit and reflect on the beauty and tranquility of the space. While the Grotto itself doesn't offer food, the Notre Dame campus and surrounding area have numerous dining options, from casual cafes to upscale restaurants.
